Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy
Counselling usually implies a brief engagement, perhaps of a few weeks or months, and is often focused to a small number of issues.
Psychotherapy usually implies a longer term engagement and will tend to focus more deeply on any number of issues. Psychotherapy trainings are often longer than those for counselling.
In practice there is often some crossover between the skills associated with counselling and those associated with psychotherapy. My ability to call upon all these skills is indicated by my designation as an integrative practitioner.
The term integrative also has further meanings. There are many different schools of thought that seek to explain how our minds work, and how we interact with the world and the people around us. I believe when considered alongside each other these theories can complement one another, which can mean for a broader understanding of the challenges we face each day.
Working integratively also refers to the process of integrating the personality. We habitually hide, suppress and defend aspects of ourselves, often without realising that we do so. These behaviours may serve a purpose in the short term, but we are denying ourselves fulfilment in the long term as the effort of so much hiding, suppressing and defending takes its toll. Integrative counselling and psychotherapy seeks to reacquaint us with those hidden and forgotten parts of ourselves and remind us of what potential lies within.
